Summary

This qualification is ideal for learners wishing to develop practical, transferable skills in mathematics in order to work confidently, effectively and independently in life.

It is suitable for a wide range of individuals and is fundamental to the successful completion of various wider qualifications, including Apprenticeships. It is also suitable for learners aiming to progress to Functional Skills Maths Level 2.

Components

The Functional Skills qualifications in Maths (at all Levels) only assesses one component: mathematics. 

The performance standards are based on three key areas:

  • Representing – making sense of a situation and representing it mathematically.
  • Analysing – processing and using maths.
  • Interpreting – interpreting and communicating the results of analysis.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for Functional Skills Maths Level 1. All candidates will take an initial Skills Assessment and Diagnostic test (online or paper- based) to assess the appropriate level of entry.

Learners registered on these qualifications shouldn’t undertake another qualification at the same time with the same or a similar title, as duplication of learning may affect funding eligibility.

Units and Assessment

To be awarded the Functional Skills qualification in mathematics learners are required to successfully complete the mandatory component by achieving either a:

  • Written test; or
  • Multiple choice test (online, using the e-volve system).

Test duration and permitted materials

The duration of this test is 90 minutes(calculator and protractor permitted).
